The Dallas Holocaust & Human Rights Museum, located in the West End Historic District of downtown Dallas, is dedicated to teaching the history of the Holocaust and advancing human rights. While no building can fully convey the inhumanity of the Holocaust, the museum serves as a vessel for presenting its human repercussions and realities, creating a meaningful, impactful experience. Its architecture reflects this notion of a journey, guiding visitors through a series of highly experiential spaces that encourage focus and absorption of the exhibits. The site design fosters vibrant urban spaces, allows sunlight to reach the museum, and responds to view corridors from nearby landmarks. The building is clad in copper, which will naturally patina over time, giving the museum a lasting, distinct presence, and it is designed to achieve LEED certification. Its U-shaped form shields the courtyard curtain wall from direct sunlight, while the west wing overhang protects the entry from western sun exposure. The project encourages sustainable transportation through proximity to light rail and bus lines, bike racks, and accommodations for low-emission vehicles. Water efficiency is emphasized with drought-tolerant landscaping and high-efficiency plumbing, while both exterior and interior materials prioritize reuse and recycled content. The extensive use of copper, with its high recycled content and infinite recyclability, underscores the museum’s commitment to sustainability and enduring legacy.
