History
In 1921, a chance sighting of steel reinforcing bars sticking out of old concrete rubble piqued the curiosity of company founder Albert C. Bean, Sr. Inquisitive by nature, he noticed that the rebar was completely rust-free. After further investigation and testing, his discovery of the anti-corrosive alkaline conditions in cement led to a patent for a highly effective, rust-inhibiting coatings formulation. In tribute to his breakthrough, he changed the company name to Tnemec – cement spelled backwards. And, even though the name reflects on our past, our founder’s legacy still pushes our company forward today.

Tnemec is heavily invested in the development of innovative coatings designed to solve specific industry challenges, and has been for over 100 years. By focusing on performance testing and using top-of-the-line equipment, Tnemec ensures that every product offered by our company is well-suited to exceed expectation in its intended exposure. Using only high-quality binders, resins, pigments and additives, Tnemec products are formulated to perform both in accelerated testing protocols and in the field. Our company tests and re-tests every product – following industry-recognized testing standards, like ASTM B117, ASTM D 4587, etc. – to qualify each coating’s ability to resist corrosion, UV light, abrasion and other causes of coating degradation.
Sustainability
Tnemec offers high-performance coating systems built to protect your sustainable structures. These coatings can match the performance of high-solvent products but comply with local air district VOC requirements and several environmental programs, such as the LEED v5 rating system. We manufacture an array of low VOC coatings, including epoxies, polyurethanes, fluoropolymers and zinc-rich primers with less than 100 grams per liter VOCs.
