Vista Drive Pavilion

The Vista Drive Pavilion, inspired by artist Robert Kelly, is a striking interplay of solids and voids with varying levels of transparency. The charcoal trapezoid structure is topped with a distinctive five-ridge metal roof, under which public spaces remain open and inviting while private rooms are intimate and comforting. Interior ceilings follow the rooflines, creating unique spatial configurations that refract natural light, lower over private areas and taller over public zones, connecting the interior visually and physically to surrounding gardens. White walls and white oak floors establish a restrained modern palette, while the dark central kitchen anchors the plan as the heart of the home, with spaces radiating outward in a dynamic play of solids and voids. In the evening, the blackened exterior recedes into darkness, leaving a floating silhouette punctuated by portals of light. The south-facing roof integrates a 14 kW photovoltaic system, designed to maximize efficiency while blending seamlessly with the dark metal. A high-performing envelope uses Zip-R continuous exterior insulation to achieve R-27 walls with R-6 continuous insulation, giving the house a sense of floating lightness, enabling flush-integrated downspouts and gutters, and supporting its highly insulated, modern design.
