Donovan Lighting was started by our founder in June of 1987 in a basement machine shop in rural upstate New York. Brian Donovan was smitten with the idea of illuminated materials as wall art and a medium in which to express his appreciation for the deco and moderne styles of architecture by crafting illuminated objects of metal, plastics, glass and wood. He conceived the idea for the business while pursuing an MFA degree at Syracuse University in Scenic Design. After spending the previous decade in the building trades and working as an auto mechanic, it seemed a natural transition to mix the arts and trades in a business endeavor.

Modular Approach
Designs reflect a contemporary interpretation of the art deco and machine age aesthetic, where strong, simple geometry and graceful curves mix with a taste of color and metal finishes to create a dramatic and unique style.
