Celebrating its 150th year in 2022, the company was founded as the Butter Company® in 1872 by Gustav A. Butter. The company originally focused on home hardware supplies and expanded into home décor products through various retail channels over the years. As Design House®, its portfolio of products has evolved in the home décor and furniture spaces. The current corporate headquarters location was opened in 2002, and additional distribution and sourcing locations were added. The company acquired Leick Home®, a company with four generations of quality furniture making experience, in 2020.
