Mohican Hills House

Mohican Hills, a small community in Glen Echo, Maryland near Washington, DC, is known for its high concentration of contemporary and mid-century modern homes. This new house is sited on a steep, sloping lot along the ridge, oriented to capture distant views of the Potomac River while preserving mature trees and an existing clearing. The linear composition of spaces is organized around a two-story living area with an open floor plan, integrating a high-ceilinged volume with adjacent intimate spaces. A first-floor office can convert into a fifth bedroom, while a three-story entry volume separates the master suite from subsidiary bedrooms. Expanses of glass provide daylighting and views into the wooded landscape, with solar-sensitive shades mitigating heat gain. A concrete slab throughout the main floor supports passive solar energy, stained dark to maximize heat absorption and storage. The house employs energy-efficient appliances, high-performance HVAC, insulated walls and ceilings, and a ventilated envelope to reduce fossil fuel use. Large operable windows and doors allow natural ventilation and direct outdoor access. Thermally modified, sustainably sourced wood siding offers a durable, non-toxic alternative to exotic hardwoods, reinforcing the home’s environmentally conscious design.
