Mechanical Conditioning vs. Mechanical Ventilation

Ventilation

Course Description

While the specifics of a building’s mechanical system are primarily the responsibility of the mechanical designer, architects typically find it helpful to understand the basics well enough to make informed decisions about the character of the interior spaces they create, particularly with respect to indoor air quality.  In this respect, there is nothing more fundamental than the difference between mechanical conditioning and mechanical ventilation.  But while the former is completely standard (at least with respect to temperature control), the latter can be elusive.  This short presentation describes the most common approaches to each in residential design.
